What's the Best Social Media Platform for Churches?

If you want to reach your community with the good news of Jesus and connect them into meaningful community at your church using social media the first question to ask is which platforms you should be focusing on.

It can sometimes be difficult to to the best strategy with social media, but this is an easy question to answer. For almost all churches the first it is best to invest heavily into Facebook instead of other platforms.

  • WhatsApp: 1,600 Million Users
  • Instagram: 1,000 Million Users
  • Tik Tok: 500 Million Users
  • Snapchat: 314 Million Users
  • Twitter: 330 Million Users

The first reason to choose Facebook is reach.  With 2,414 million users it has the most users and dominates other social media platforms like Twitter, Snapchat, and even Instagram. Although some other social media platforms may be trendier with specific (usually younger) audiences, Facebook has a huge following and will be the best way for most churches to reach the most people.  The exception to this is age specific ministries like youth groups or young adult ministries that might find Instagram or the rising Tik Tok.

The second reason to choose Facebook is features. It is by far the most robust social media platform and some features such as events are critical in developing a complete web strategy. 

Lastly, the final reason to choose Facebook is advertising. Although other platforms offer advertising Facebook offers the best and most affordable advertising option for churches.

Three Ways to Reach Your Community Through Facebook

Now that you’ve settled on using Facebook for your church’s social media platform, the next question is how to actually use it to reach your community.  Remember, your goal here is twofold. Firstly, you want to connect people with the life changing good news of Jesus. Second, you want to plug them in to meaningful community where they grow in their relationship with Jesus.

1. Meaningful Conversations

One unique strength of social media is that it enables online relationships and meaningful conversations. We all know that often social media brings out the worst in people and conversations often are mean spirited, divisive, and vile. As you and your church engage on social you are not only reaching people in your community with the gospel, you are showing that gospel at work by the fruits of the spirit being on display through your social interactions.
